Igbo Speaking Community Lagos Suspends Planned Great Achievers Awards – Warns Public

The leadership of the Igbo Speaking Community Lagos State has announced the suspension of its planned Great Achievers Awards earlier scheduled to hold on Sunday, 20th September, 2026.

The President General of the Igbo Speaking Community Lagos State, Chief Chukwudi Chinye, made the announcement in a statement issued on behalf of the community, stating that the event which was being organized under the title of Nnoka Ndigbo for the conferment of chieftaincy titles has been put on hold.

According to the statement, the suspended event was scheduled to take place at 12 noon at the Army Cantonment, Charity Bus Stop, Oshodi, Lagos.

Chief Chinye explained that the decision to suspend the high-profile event was taken after careful review of unfolding developments surrounding the organization of the programme and in the interest of compliance with the laws of Lagos State.

He listed three major reasons for the suspension.

First, the statement alleged that Chief Sunday Udeh,  is no longer the President General of the Igbo Speaking Community for  crowning an Obi Ndigbo of Lagos which he is  allegedly facing criminal trial at the Lagos High Court. The statement further alleged that the planned action disregards Lagos State Government laws on chieftaincy titles in the state.

Second, the leadership cited alleged commercialization of chieftaincy titles contrary to the laws of Lagos State.

Third, it mentioned other sundry offences currently under review by the leadership of the community and relevant authorities.

The President General stressed that the Igbo Speaking Community Lagos State as a law-abiding organization is committed to upholding the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the extant laws of Lagos State regulating chieftaincy matters.

In a strong warning to members of the public, the leadership of the Igbo Speaking Community Lagos State wishes to state categorically that it will not be held liable for any activity or outcome arising from the said event if it goes ahead despite this suspension order.

Members of the public and all invited guests are hereby advised that whoever attends the event does so at his or her own risk.

The Igbo Speaking Community Lagos State further urged security agencies, traditional institutions and the Lagos State Government to take note of the suspension and to monitor compliance.

It also advised Ndigbo in Lagos State to remain calm, law-abiding and to disregard any invitation or publication emanating from unauthorized persons in connection with the suspended chieftaincy coronation and awards.

As at the time of filing this report, efforts to get reactions from Chief Sunday Udeh proved abortive.
