Igbonine Great People’s Assembly Inaugurated In Enugu, Pledges Unity, Culture Preservation And Youth Empowerment

Distinguished sons and daughters of Igbonine gathered in Enugu from August 14 to 15, 2026, for the inaugural meeting of the Igbonine Great People’s Assembly, IGPA, with a resolve to promote the unity, dignity, culture and socio-economic advancement of Ndigbo.
The 2-day meeting held at Top Rank Hotel, Enugu, commenced on Friday, August 14, with an opening prayer by Chief Eze Comart Humphrey, Chairman, Rivers State Chapter. Certificates and letters of appointment were presented to deserving officers before proceedings continued on Saturday, August 15.
After extensive deliberations, the Assembly formally inaugurated IGPA as a non-partisan, non-religious and inclusive platform committed to the collective interests of Igbo people at home and in the Diaspora.
The Assembly considered and ratified the Constitution, Code of Conduct and Byelaws of IGPA. The documents will serve as the principal governing instruments, outlining ethical standards, operational guidelines, membership, leadership, discipline, welfare, financial matters and conflict resolution mechanisms.
The Assembly reaffirmed its commitment to Igbo unity and solidarity irrespective of political affiliation, religion, state of origin or social status. It resolved to promote dialogue, mediation and reconciliation in line with Igbo traditional mechanisms for peaceful dispute settlement.
On welfare, IGPA resolved to establish structures to support members and their families during bereavement, illness, emergencies and other circumstances requiring collective support.
The Assembly also committed to the preservation and promotion of Igbo language, customs, history, arts and cultural heritage for present and future generations.
On youth and women, IGPA resolved to encourage their meaningful participation and leadership development, describing them as vital to the future of Igbo society. The Assembly said it will prioritize programmes that create opportunities for women and young people across all chapters.
For economic development, the Assembly said it will promote entrepreneurship, skills acquisition, education, employment and investment. It will also pursue empowerment programmes for youths, including the traditional Igbo Odibo apprenticeship system, and encourage economic cooperation among Igbo people globally.
The Assembly further resolved to serve as a responsible platform for advocacy on issues affecting the welfare, security, rights and development of Ndigbo, while respecting the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
IGPA affirmed its leadership structure and called on all elected and appointed officers to discharge their duties with integrity, transparency and accountability. The Assembly is led by Dr. Ugochukwu Cyril Nnajiofor as National President and Chairman of Council. Elder Marce Okezuonu Anyanwu serves as National Secretary and BOT Member.
The Office of the Director of Public Relations was zoned to Rivers State in the interest of equity. The Assembly also resolved to fill vacant positions with committed members.
On Diaspora engagement, IGPA resolved to strengthen ties with Igbo communities and organizations outside Nigeria and encourage their participation in programs aimed at advancing collective interests.
The Assembly concluded that meetings will be held in accordance with its Constitution and Byelaws, with adequate notice and proper records kept by the National Secretary.
The meeting ended on Saturday, August 15, at 3pm with a closing prayer by Comrade Obiewutesi, alias Egbeji. Delegates were appreciated for their contributions and wished safe trips to their destinations.
The communiqué was e-signed by Dr. Ugochukwu Cyril Nnajiofor, National President/Chairman Council, and Elder Marce Okezuonu Anyanwu, National Secretary/BOT Member.
