Lagos State Govt Assures Monarch On Relocation Of Oko-Baba Sawmill

Posted on December 15, 2019

The Lagos State Government has assured the Monarch of Owu-Ikosi, Oba Nelson Olayomi Aderemi Ogunlaru, of the speedy completion of the intended relocation of Oko-Baba Sawmill to Agbowa-Ikosi in the eastern part of the State.

The assurance was given by the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr. Idris Salako, during a courtesy visit by the Oba of Owu-Ikosi to the Ministry in Alausa.

Dr. Salako assured that the planned relocation of the sawmill to Agbowa-Ikosi would not become an abandoned project, given the pedigree of the present administration for completing inherited projects in order to engender steady development of the State.

“Without a doubt, efforts are in top gear to ensure that actual relocation activities from Oko-baba to Agbowa-Ikosi will commence by the first quarter of the year 2020 as this is imperative for the socio-economic and physical development as well as the sustainability of the environment at both ends”, he said.

He recalled that the Timberville project, conceived for the relocation of the Okobaba sawmill to Agbowa, was initiated out of the need to find a lasting solution to environmental concerns posed by the activities of the sawmill in Ebute-Metta and the perennial fire outbreaks it occasioned.

He said that to fast track the movement of the sawmillers to Agbowa Timberville, both the log preparation and boom areas were ready for use while the link road that would facilitate easy access to the site was receiving attention from the government.

The Physical Planning Commissioner stated that the government was in constant engagement with the sawmillers who had expressed their readiness to relocate to Agbowa.

Oba Ogunlaru, who was accompanied by his High Chiefs and Baales, thanked the Lagos State Government for locating the project in their domain and appealed for its speedy completion to allow their community to reap its immense benefits, as the project stands to boost the socio-economic and physical development of their community.

He added that the community was willing to give more land to the government for more developmental projects for the benefit of the people.
