Lagos State Government has again met with traditional rulers and residents of communities in Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Area of the State on the implementation of a new model of sustainable electricity supply to residents of the area.

The State Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Engr. Olalere Odusote, speaking at the meeting with stakeholders, said that the power model will bring about a new narrative in electricity supply to residents of Ibeju-Lekki, revealing that the State Government has entered a partnership with African Development Bank, USAID and NRECA International with the support of EKEDC and IKEDC to guarantee stable power supply to the communities.

Odusote, represented at the event held recently at Magbon-Alade Secondary School, Magbon, Ibeju Lekki by the Director and Head of Power Department of the Ministry, Engr. Afeez Momoh, urged residents of the community to give maximum cooperation to the State Government and all its partners in order to bring the lofty initiative to fruition.

Noting that the engagement is an opportunity to constitute a steering committee for the post-Lekki Electricity Co-operative, the Commissioner explained that the money needed to rehabilitate the power supply to the communities will be provided by African Development Bank under a cooperative arrangement with the support of USAID and NRECA.

On her part, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Ms. Sholabomi Shasore, represented by the Director, Oil and Gas Department, Engr. Ayodele Anthonio said: “The State Government is determined to ensure the success of the initiative by giving the Electricity Cooperative Model, all necessary support”.

Shasore stated that the project when completed, will boost the economic growth of the Lekki area as business owners and all households within the communities will pay less on electricity tariffs when compared to generating power supply on their own.

She, however, added that more cooperation and support are expected from members of the communities, who are to play their part to ensure the full realisation of the project.

The Permanent Secretary pledged the commitment of the government to the project, assuring that the resolutions will be looked into and fully implemented.

Also speaking at the stakeholders’ meeting, the Chairman of Ibeju-Lekki Local Government, Engr. Abdullahi Sesan Olowa, appreciated Governor Sanwo-Olu and members of his cabinet for always prioritising the needs of residents of the LGA through different people-oriented developmental projects and policies.

Also, the Director of Co-operative from the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Cooperatives, Mrs. Zulikha Ibraheem, said that the Electricity Cooperative would be of great benefit to everyone that belongs to the Cooperative Society.

She explained that the essence of constituting a steering committee for the project is to ensure transparency and accountability among the members.
