Lagos To Provide 70 million Gallons of Water Daily —Sanwo-Olu

Posted on February 5, 2025

The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Wednesday, stated that the second phase of the Adiyan Water Works, once completed, would provide 70 million gallons of water daily to residents.

Sanwo-Olu made this known during an inspection of the Adiyan Water Works in Ogun State, revealing that the project had reached 80 per cent completion.

“I think the main achievement for us is what we have seen at Adiyan. Adiyan II is designed to produce 70 million gallons per day, and from today’s inspection, we can see that it is about 80 per cent completed.

“The electromagnetic and electromechanical components, including the pumps, are on site, and installation will soon begin.

“I have been informed that about 70 to 75 per cent of the required equipment has arrived, particularly for the raw water intake, where pipes are being laid from Akute to the Ogun River.

“The contractor is working on all three components of the project and has assured us that in another 10 to 12 months, this place will be completely transformed,” he said.

The governor commended both the contractor and the local community for their cooperation in ensuring the provision of potable drinking water for Lagos residents.

“These pipes extend all the way to Akute, where water is drawn from the Ogun River before being transported to Adiyan.

“The local community is as pleased as we are, as evident from the warm reception we received.

“Compensation has already been paid by both the Lagos and Ogun state governments,” Sanwo-Olu added.

However, he acknowledged that more work remains to be done to ensure the project’s completion before the end of his second term.

“The job is not finished yet; we still have a lot to do in terms of transmission and capacity building.

“This is another promise fulfilled, though delayed. It will be a project Lagosians will be proud of, one that will enhance both the economy and quality of life in the state,” he said.

The governor emphasised that providing potable drinking water to improve residents’ living standards is a fundamental government responsibility, especially in a megacity like Lagos.

“Water is a critical resource that the government must provide, and we are pleased that Adiyan II will fulfil this responsibility,” Sanwo-Olu said.

He further noted that efforts would be made to lay pipes across the Lagos Lagoon to supply water to the island, including Ikoyi and Lekki.
