Ndigbo Media Forum has advised the Federal Government of Nigeria against the proposed concessioning of the sole international airport in the Southeast zone for 80 years.
P.M.EXPRESS reports as was disclosed by the National Coordinator of the group, Rev. Paul Eze, in Lagos State.
The group noted that the introduction of the 80 years concessioning of the  airport as alleged is not only excessive,  but also detrimental to the economic and social welfare of the zone and the country.
Eze said, “Conceeding the only  international airport in the zone could jeopardize our nation’s air travel accessibility and economic growth for generations”.
“We advocate for the concessioning period of no longer than 20years, similar to what has been granted to other local airports, ensuring that our national interest remains a priority and that we do not sacrifice our future for temporary gains.”
“This concessioning proposal raises concerns of potentials loss of control over a critical national asset and the long term implications for loss of local jobs.”
The group emphasised the need for transparency and public consultation in the decision – making process around such significant development.
The NMF called on Igbo leaders, political representatives, and others to participate in the public forums with demand for a more reasonable and sustainable alternative for the planned concession.
“We must stand together to protect our only international airport and by extention, our citizens’ rights and opportunities. Now is the time for action, as our collective voices can make difference” Eze stated.
The group in their final submission invites the concerned critical stakeholders from the Southeast to join them in their efforts to ensure that local interests are prioritized and that the airport remains a thriving hub that benefits the community and Nigeria as a whole.
