Liverpool 1-1 Manchester City: Reds & The Cityzens Share Points At Anfield

A breathtaking spectacle at Anfield saw Liverpool and reigning Premier League holders Manchester City play out a 1-1 draw in their Matchday 28 fixture of the 2023/2024 domestic season on Sunday evening.

The Cityzens began proceedings on the front and with purpose, with Julian Alvarez troubling the Reds with a shot as early as the third minute but Caiomhin Kelleher made a comfortable save.

With just over a quarter of an hour gone, Liverpool full-back Conor Bradley attempted to fire one in, but his effort went just wide off the post.

The Reds soon scored in the 19th minute through Luis Diaz but the Colombian’s effort was chalked off, due to offside in the buildup.

It was the visitors who indeed got the breakthrough in the 24th minute. A well-taken corner-kick whipped in by Kevin de Bruyne found John Stones, who in turn fired past Kelleher to put City in front.

The home side then enjoyed spells of possession as they sought for the equalizer. Opportunities came the way of Darwin Nunez and Dominik Szobozslai but the Cityzens managed to hold onto the advantage heading into half-time.

The second period began in blistering fashion, with Liverpool awarded a penalty after City goalkeeper Ederson was brought down Darwin Nunez in the box. Alexis MacAllister stepped up and duly converted from twelve yards to bring the Reds level in the 50th minute.

Liverpool gaffer Jurgen Klopp then brought on Egyptian talisman Mo Salah and Andy Robertson in a bid to sustain the momentum, following the leveller. Luis Diaz was guilty of missing gilt-edged chances as the hosts failed to make their momentum count.

Man City soon responded to the challenge with a chance of theirs, with Phil Foden’s header coming off the post in the 74th minute.

Substitute Jeremy Doku did well late on but his shot hit the right post in the 89th minute, before City keeper Ortega Moreno (who had replaced Ederson earlier on) saved a poor effort from Mo Salah in the 90th.

It all finished with the spoils being shared at Anfield, with both sides now second and third respectively in the Premier League standings behind Arsenal as the race for the 2023/2024 top-flight title continues.
