A total of 150 students have graduated from Olusegun Coding 2.0 robotics training of Obalende Local Council Development Area (LCDA) in Lagos State after completing a 10-day course in various skills.
The participants were trained in web development, robotics, game development, graphics design, stratch program catering, artificial intelligence, Computer and Coding during the 2nd edition of the programme.
From junior category, Oliver Foster, who took the first position, got a laptop; Joel Oluwaseyi Williams, and Moyosere Oluwa Adeboyejo, got N150,000 and N150,000 for the second and third positions.
While in the senior category, Adebayo Bolatito, who came first, got a laptop; Ernest Jesphthal and Ajala Oluwaseun, also got N150,000 each for the second and third positions
Speaking at the grand finale graduation, on Thursday, Co-Chairman/CEO, SR IPD CEO Logistics Company, Mr. Olusegun Idowu, charged the participants to be dedicated to the various coding skills learned, unlearned and relearned.
While responding to journalists, Olusegun responded that the coding initiative is an ability to used education to reduce poverty, unemployment because when the children have this prerequisite skills, it will enable them to be competitive globally.
They will have the skills to work remotely as against crime, which is the essence of Olusegun Coding Class.
“In the first edition last year, about 120 children participated and the impact was enormous. Today, you could see the winners for last year edition came here and could express himself, confidently offhand and explain how to develop website, Robotics, AI intelligence and so on, that is the whole essence of this programme.”
“When we got the feedback on the first edition, we decided to take the Olusegun Coding Class beyond Obalende Constituency to allow people from others Local Government in Lagos State. Children from Ikeja, Ogba, Ketu and Lekki were accommodated. They acquired and gained IT knowledge targeted to catch them young and be relevant to the global economic world.”
“From the section, we could see the children, who never heard anything about coding. But with this training, they can design traffic light, stratch program, fair knowledge of Robotics and AI. And so with that, the future is bright and future is here.”
“For example, we have 500 children who picked up the forms and we have the capacity to accommodate 150 children. So your children must be able to pass the examination and the range for them to get qualified for the boot camp tech coding training 2.0 is 7 out of 10 score.”
“The only children who are able to get that range admitted for this year’s programme and last year edition not as huge as this. And the cost of this year’s programme was well over 8 million Naira without any support from anybody. This is giving back to my hood. I am from this constituency; I was born and I grew up in Obalende Constituency. I feel that this is what I can give to my community to support the children who do not know what coding is all about and this is an avenue to catch them young.”
“The government needs to introduce and start teaching coding in public schools, especially as the winners are from Private Schools. I urge the government to start the training in public school with provision of IT teachers.”
“In our next edition, we are expanding it to be bigger than this edition, which we are planning to have 2 training centres that can accommodate more participants.”
The Director, Fosters Private Schools, Mr. Patrick Foster, said, “We are here at the grand finale of the 10 days free coding and Robotics classes organised by Olusegun Idowu in Collaboration with Fosters Private Schools”.
“Although, we had over 500 children who came to pick the forms, out of which we were able to select 150 children who passed the entrance examination for the 10 days course code training.”
“The school started in 2009 as a creche school and from there metamorphosed into a full school. At Foster School, we always want to be pacesetters in whatever we do, which must go beyond conventional classroom teaching. For instance, during this training we focused only on Maths, English and majorly on coding. What we did was to creative Art, Coding, Robotics and easy for our learners to blend into the coding and Robotics because it was already part of the curriculum.”
“The school takes coding and IT skills as a priority for ourselves among the schools on Lagos Island and
when people see beyond the conventional education it becomes a plus for us. The reason Olusegun Idowu is blending with us is because we share the same ideology.”
“I wish the Lagos State Government and other arms of government would look into this and create incentive for schools that offers such programme.”
