Police operatives from the Homicide Department of the SCID, Yaba, Lagos, have arrested a 43-year old man, Joshua Simon, who allegedly murdered another man by slitting his throat with a kitchen knife.

P.M.EXPRESS reports that the incident happened on 7th May, 2022, at Abesan Estate, Ipaja area of Lagos.

The Police did not disclose what caused the fight between the suspect and the deceased, which led to the dastardly act. But the Police alleged that the suspect, Simon, used the knife, held the man’s throat and cut the veins and he bled to death.
By the time the victim was taken to the hospital, he was already dead; the doctors merely certified him dead and the corpse was deposited at the mortuary for autopsy report.

The alleged murder was reported to the Police in the area and the suspect was arrested and transferred to the SCID for further investigation.

After thorough interrogation and having been found culpable, the Police charged him before the Yaba Magistrates Court for murder, which attracts life imprisonment or death by hanging if he is tried and found guilty before the Court.

However, when he was arraigned, the Court did not take his plea following a motion moved by the prosecutor, Supol Rita Momah, asking the Court to refer the matter to the DPP for advice.

The Presiding Magistrate, Mrs. Adeola Olatunbosun, ordered his remand in the Correctional Centre pending when the DPP’s report will be ready. The Court also directed the prosecutor to duplicate the file and send it to the DPP while the matter was adjourned for the report of the DPP to be available, which will determine if the matter will be transferred to the High Court or not over jurisdiction.
