A 46-year old man, Olaniyi Michael, has landed in trouble in Lagos State by displaying his boxing skills on his rival, Owodunni Adelaja, 46 and punching him to death during a public brawl.
P.M.EXPRESS reports that the suspect, Michael, has been arrested.
The incident happened at Hassan Benson Street, Ayobo area of Lagos, where they reside.
According to Police sources, the suspect, Michael and the late Adelaja had a disagreement over an undisclosed matter, which led to exchange of words and later degenerated to physical fighting.
During the fight, Michael reportedly rained fist blows on the deceased, he slumped and became unconscious before he was rushed to an undisclosed hospital, where he was confirmed dead by the doctors.
The corpse was deposited at the mortuary while the matter was reported to the operatives at Ayobo Police Division. The suspect, Michael, was arrested and then transferred to the SCID at Yaba for further investigation over the alleged murder.
During interrogation, Michael reportedly told the Police that he did not intend to kill the victim during the fight. But his explanations did not save him as he was subsequently charged before the Ebute Metta Magistrate Court for the alleged offence, which attracts life imprisonment.
However, the Court did not take his plea when he was arraigned following a motion moved by the prosecutor, Supol Cousin Adams, asking the Court to refer the matter to the DPP for legal advice because of the nature of the case.
The Presiding Magistrate, Mrs F.F. George, ordered his remand in custody at the Correctional Centre pending the outcome of the DPP’s advice and directed the prosecutor to duplicate the file and send it to the DPP.
The matter was adjourned for mention for the report of the DPP’s advice to be made available, which will determine if the matter will be transferred to the High Court or not over jurisdiction.
