A young man, Mr. Emmanuel Obi slumped in the court room in Lagos after he was arraigned and he realised that he was to be remanded in prison custody.
The incident happened on Monday at the Magistrates court sitting at Ejigbo District, Lagos where Mr. Obi was brought.
The suspect, Mr. Obi was arrested by the police at Igando Division and charged before the court for allegedly assaulting a woman police sergeant Glory Akindeji at the Igando area where the suspect resided and the victim was serving at the police division.
P.M.EXPRESS could not confirm whether Obi actually assaulted the victim as he consistently denied ever touching her as claimed by the victim but that they had exchange of words.
However, he was charged before Ejigbo Magistrate court for assault and using abusive words against Akindeji while on lawful duty.
He pleaded not guilty.
The Presiding Magistrate, Mr. L.K.J. Layeni granted him bail in the sum of N50,000 with two sureties in like sum.
The prosecutor, Inspector G. Simon did not object his bail because the alleged offence was bailable.
He was ordered to be remanded in prison custody pending when he will perfect his bail condition.
When Obi realised that he was on his way take to the waiting prison vehicle, he slumped in the court room and became unconscious. The court security rushed into the court room and carried him outside.
It was gathered that at the initial stage, the police officers that brought him to court thought that he was just pretending. But when he remained like that for several hours, it became clear to the IPO that Obi had actually fainted. The prison warders on duty declined to carry him inside the waiting vehicle.
The IPO became helpless on what to do with Obi before the reporter left the court in the evening.
The matter was adjourned till 30 April, 2018.

I have a strong feeling the police are lying against him. My brother was a victim during an incident that happened right in presence. A woman attempted to slap me while I was trying to write down her name and ID number. Thankfully she missed me. They wanted to extort money from our driver and they removed the truck battery. I advised against bribing them. Long story short, my brother was later arrested when they went back to the police station to get the truck battery. They were actually after me, and my brother was sent to Ikoyi prison, charged to court for assault. After multiple trips to the court while I returned to my base outside Nigeria, the judge threw out the case. Imagine been charged to court for something you did not do. For the fact that I was there when the incident happened and I was the one the policewoman attempted to slap shows that this is a common thing. In this case too, it is a policewoman that is claiming that the supposed suspect tried to assault her. Very similar to our case.
