An embittered husband, Mr. Abdul, has told the Court in Oyo State that his in-laws gave him a prostitute as wife, which has brought bitterness and sorrow in his marriage to his embattled wife, Mariam.
Thus, Abdul has filed a suit before the Grade A Customary Court, Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, seeking for the dissolution of the marriage with Mariam for him to move on with his life.
Abdul filed the suit against his wife, Mariam, whom he accused of being irresponsible, fond of telling lies, being unfaithful and a thief.
Abdul told the Court that Mariam squandered the money he gave her to start a business and finally moved out of his house with his belongings because he could no longer tolerate her immoral lifestyle. And when Mariam finally returned to his house, she came back with another man’s pregnancy.
The plaintiff told the Court he has had enough of his wife’s atrocities and therefore, prayed the Court to end their relationship. But Mariam denied all the allegations brought against her.
Abdul stated: “My marriage to my wife has brought me nothing but shame and pain”.
“I never knew my in-laws were offering me a prostitute when I paid my wife’s bride price.  I take my wife’s word with a pinch of salt because she is a liar. She embarrasses me with her many lies and has failed to be a good example to our children. I gave Mariam a meaningful amount of money to start a business. But my wife, to my chagrin, squandered the whole amount. She could not give an account till date of how she spent the whole amount.”
“She borrowed N70,000 from someone without my knowledge and I was left with no other option than to do a refund to her creditor when the embarrassment was rather too much. My wife has been unfaithful to me. Everyone in our neighbourhood knew Mariam to be a prostitute. My wife would abandon the home and our children after I had gone to work and would go out with other men.”
“I moved about in shame because of the smear her indecent lifestyle brought on me. I confronted her with the several information I had about her escapades, but she denied them. We fought almost all the time and she eventually moved out of my house. She not only walked out of our marriage, but went along with my belongings. I made a report at the Police station, but unfortunately, none of my property has been retrieved from her and restored to me till date.”
“Mariam has no dignity and also lacks decency. She went back to her first husband whom she had a child for before she met me. She attempted to dent my image before her family members and lied that I was a drunk. Mariam also falsely accused me of physically assaulting her. She moved out of her first husband’s house a second time and was living alone. Her family members later mediated in our differences and she moved back to my house. I regret ever acceding to such a peace move.”
“My lord, I am done with Mariam.  I do not wish to set my eyes on her again. I pray this honourable Court to end our marriage.”
The President of the Court, Mrs. S.M Akintayo, after she had heard the plaintiff, adjourned the case till 5th March, 2024, for further hearing on the matter.
