Derek, from Abba in Nwangele Local Government area of Imo State, Nigeria, his career reflects integrity, empathy, and an unyielding dedication to justice. Judge Derek U. Obialo graduated from the Abia State University, Uturu, with LLB (Bachelor of Laws) in 1990, the Nigerian Law School (Lagos- Nigeria) with Barrister -at- law in 1991, Huston Christian University (formerly Houston Baptist University) with MBA in 2003, and University of Miami (Florida) with Juris Doctor in 2007. Prior to law school in Miami, Florida, Judge Obialo worked in construction claims consulting. Before assuming office as the Associate Judge of the 240th District Court in January 2025, he maintained a successful legal practice for 17 years primarily in the areas of construction law and business litigation.

 

Judge Obialo is a longtime member of the Texas College of the State Bar, holds several awards from the community and is passionate about public service and giving back to the community. His swearing-in ceremony had in attendance his parents, Chief Sir DC and Lady DC Obialo, his wife Dorothy Obialo and children, several other family members, friends and well-wishers.
