After many years of philanthropic gesture to residents within and outside his kingdom, one of the most popular traditional rulers in Lagos, Oba Saheed Ademola Elegushi has concluded plans to put all his humanitarian activities under foundation, with the trustees comprising eminent Nigerians from different walks of life.

To underscore the commitment of the foundation to human capital development, it recently celebrated the International Day of the Girl Child with girls in secondary schools in Ikate kingdom.

The Day, which is celebrated annually on October 11, aims to promote girls’ empowerment and fulfilment of their human rights while also highlighting the challenges faced by girls all over the world.

Speaking on the gesture, Oba Elegushi said it was to celebrate the girl-child and support government and other agencies in ensuring the protection and development of young girls in the community.

The Monarch, who was represented at the event by the Aro Oba of Ikate kingdom, Chief Lekan Bakare and Ms. Aiki Odiawa, called on non-governmental organisations and corporate organisations to complement government’s efforts in encouraging girls’ education in the country.

Dr Ufuoma Adingwupu, a Primary Health Physician at Badore Health Centre, mentored the girls on menstrual cycle and the myth around it, as well as staying healthy and hygienic during their menstrual flow.

According to her, personal hygiene should be their watchword and they should always be neat during menstruation and after their menstrual period to avoid contracting infections.

One of the students, Precious Salami, who shared her excitement, said she was very happy to have benefited from the programme and thanked Oba Elegushi for reaching out to her and her mates.

The schools visited include Gbara Secondary School and Ilasan Junior and Senior Secondary Schools.
