The Honourable Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Gbenga Omotoso, has paid glowing tributes to media elders, noting their lasting legacies have helped shape the journalism profession in Nigeria.

He made the remark at the Appreciation Day for Nigeria’s News Media Elders organised by the Journalism Clinic, held at the Nigerian Institute of Journalism (NIJ), Ogba, Lagos on Wednesday.

While speaking, Omotoso, who was represented by the Director, Strategy Centre, Mr. Kayode Oyekanmi, noted that although many of them have retired from active service, their influence continues to resonate powerfully across the profession, “This celebration reminds us that Journalism is not just a career but a lifelong calling that demands courage, integrity, fairness and an unwavering commitment to truth and public service.

“The baton you passed on remains in the hands of younger practitioners and I am proud to say that I’m one of the many proteges who have benefited from your mentorship and wisdom in the noble craft of Journalism,” he said.

The Commissioner added that the elders have inspired generations of reporters, editors, and Broadcasters to approach their craft with both passion and patriotism.

It is therefore, deeply heartwarming they are being recognised whilst still alive by the professional community for their immense contributions to building an informed and conscious society- an act of gratitude which will go a long way in promoting the spirit of patriotism, humility and continuity in the Journalism profession.

Omotoso further emphasised that the Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s Administration continues to foster open communication, uphold press freedom and create opportunities for professional development and collaboration, “On behalf of the Lagos State Government, I say thank you for your service, sacrifices and exemplary dedication and may your legacies continue to inspire new generations of journalists to be ethical, courageous and committed to the ideals of truth and nation-building,” he concluded.
