In a remarkable celebration of family legacy, academic excellence, and the limitless potential of the Nigerian girl child, two distinguished daughters of one of Nigeria’s foremost academic families have continued to make history on the national stage, proving that greatness is nurtured through values, education, and purposeful leadership.

The spotlight shines on Mrs. Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya, SAN, the newly elected President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), and her younger sister, Dr. Jumoke Oduwole, Nigeria’s Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment. Their remarkable achievements stand as a powerful testament to the enduring legacy of excellence established by their parents and the transformative power of educating the girl child.

The sisters are daughters of the late Professor Afolabi Olumide, an eminent Professor of Medicine and the pioneer Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University (LASU), whose visionary leadership laid the foundation for one of Nigeria’s foremost state universities. Widely admired for his integrity, intellect and commitment to academic excellence, Professor Olumide remains one of the most respected figures in the history of higher education in Lagos State.

Equally accomplished was their mother, Mrs. Clara Olumide, who broke barriers as the first female Registrar of the University of Lagos (UNILAG). Her historic achievement paved the way for countless women in university administration and demonstrated that leadership and excellence know no gender.

Together, Professor Afolabi Olumide and Mrs. Clara Olumide built more than distinguished careers, they built a family founded on discipline, education, integrity, and service. Their greatest legacy may well be the values they instilled in their children, whose accomplishments continue to inspire generations of Nigerians.

The election of Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya, SAN, as President of the Nigerian Bar Association represents another historic milestone for women in the legal profession. As one of the country’s most accomplished legal practitioners, her emergence underscores the increasing influence of women in shaping Nigeria’s justice system and legal landscape.

Her younger sister, Dr. Jumoke Oduwole, has equally distinguished herself through years of public service and policy leadership. As Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, she plays a pivotal role in driving Nigeria’s economic transformation, investment promotion, industrial growth and private sector development.

Their success sends a compelling message to families and society: daughters are not liabilities but invaluable assets capable of attaining the highest levels of leadership and national service when given equal opportunities to learn, grow and excel.

Their story also challenges outdated cultural stereotypes that regard families blessed only with daughters as somehow less fortunate. On the contrary, the achievements of the Olumide sisters demonstrate that excellence is neither defined by gender nor limited by societal expectations.

As Nigeria continues to advocate for greater investment in girl-child education and women’s empowerment, the Olumide family’s story stands as a shining example of what becomes possible when parents invest equally in the education and development of their daughters.

Today, the names Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya (SAN) and Jumoke Oduwole resonate far beyond their family heritage. They represent resilience, brilliance, professionalism and purposeful leadership which are qualities inherited from parents who devoted their lives to education and nation-building.

Indeed, the Olumide family reminds us that the greatest inheritance parents can leave their children is not wealth, but education, character, opportunity and the courage to dream without limits. Their journey is more than a family success story; it is a national inspiration and a resounding affirmation that when you educate a girl child, you empower a family, strengthen a nation and shape the future.
