The police at Isheri Oshun Divison led by the Divisional Police officer, DPO, SP Rafaiu Akinlade, have busted a five-man robbery gang in a hideout and recovered arms which they had procured for robbery.
P.M.EXPRESS scooped that the suspected robbers had prepared for operations before the police got intelligence report and smashed them before they could strike as they had planned to raise money for Sallah celebration.
The arrest was made at a house located at Agodupeola Street in Isheri Oshun, Lagos, where the suspects had assembled to move for operations before they ran out of luck.
It was gathered that the DPO and his officers stormed the place, when the suspects saw them; they jumped the high fence, abandoned some of their weapons and escaped. However, one of the suspects identified as Michael Onwugiogu was pursued, arrested and detained at the police station.
P.M.EXPRESS gathered that during interrogations, the suspect owned up and took the police to the house where they kept some of their weapons. A short gun and jack knife which they used to rob were recovered. Police sources said that Onwugiogu had already confessed and revealed that they intended to carry out the operations in order to raise money to travel to their home town in Abia State.
When our correspondent visited Isheri Oshun Police Division later in the day on Thursday, the DPO was not around to comment on the incident. However, police sources confirmed the incident and said that the suspect was detained at the cell. The reporter was not allowed to speak with the suspect.
The police source said that the suspect will be transferred to FSARS at the State Command, Ikeja, Lagos, for further interrogations.
It was gathered that the DPO had mobilized his officers to search and arrest the suspects that escaped based on the information provided by the members of the public who expressed happiness over the success of police.
Some of the residents commended the DPO and his officers for the arrest and said that the gang had been terrorizing the residents before their operation was foiled on Thursday.
