The fight against illicit drugs in Lagos is gaining momentum following the recent breakthrough by Police operatives.

P.M.EXPRESS reports that the Police intercepted a van conveying 20 bags of substance suspected to Indian hemp, being taken to an undisclosed location in the state.

The incident happened along Itafiaji Street, Lagos Island. The driver of the van, Usman Adeyemi, was also arrested and detained by the Police for interrogation.
The owners of the hard drugs were not disclosed by the Police but the PPRO, DSP Bala Elkana, confirmed the incident and said that the Police have commenced investigation into the matter.

He said that on 16th September, 2019, at about 2am, Police Officers from Area J Command, intercepted a van along Itafaji Street, Lagos Island, loaded with 20 bags of Cannabis leaves. The driver of the van, Usman Adeyemi, 27, was arrested while the vehicle was impounded for discreet investigation.

The issue of hard drugs had been of serious concern to the Police and other security agencies due to the effect on the youths.
The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Zubairu Muazu, has earlier stated that the Police will move against drug abuse because of the consequences on the victims especially the youths in the society.
He noted that drugs act as stimulants that propel the youths to commit various crimes in the society such as armed robbery, rape and other violent crimes. That may have indeed moved the Police to be more vigilante in order to reduce the use of substance in the State.
