A serving NYSC member, Mr. Emereole Ikechukwu, from Irete, Imo State, received help from the Anambra State Police Command after he had entered a trap by Facebook scammers.
The serving NYSC member, Ikechukwu, travelled to Ogidi in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State to visit a lady friend he met on Facebook. But little did he know that he was walking straight into a gang of Facebook scammers.
On arrival, the lady friend, one Ogochukwu Onuorah, 27, arranged for a member of the gang who disguised as a commercial motorcycle operator to pick him up. Ikechukwu, a stranger to that part of the state, naively joined the motorcycle operator to an isolated and bushy area where the other gang members were lurking.
Immediately they got to the bushy area which appeared to be their den, his belongings were taken from him and he was held hostage there. They got his pin and used his ATM card to withdraw money from his account. Ikechukwu was lucky to be released by the gang alive and unhurt.
The shock and confusion he must have experienced at the time can only be imagined as he had travelled confidently to visit a supposed friend only to get robbed. Once he was freed, he reported his ordeal to the closest police station in Ogidi.
The policemen swung into action immediately and arrested some members of the gang recovering Ikechukwu’s stolen belongings in the process. Further investigation led to the identification and arrest of the fake lady friend, Ogochukwu Onuorah.
According to the Police, investigation is ongoing in order to arrest the other members of the gang.
The general public is hereby advised to be wary of Facebook and other social media friends and never hesitate to seek help from the Police and other security agencies.
