Of Political Mentors And Recalcitrant Protégés
MAZI EJIMOFOR OPARA

I am one of very many persons who believed that Mr. Peter Obi’s political personality is over bloated. He neither commands the kind of cult followership his pseudo virtual Warriors confer on him, nor bears the midas touch needed to procure electoral victory for anybody, including himself.
The electoral victories of his first and second tenure were largely hinged on the personality of the Late Igbo warlord, Dim Ojukwu. The coming of Obiano was as a result of a combination of factors that overwhelmed Peter himself. I really wonder where lies the supra human toga his cheerleaders ascribe to him.
Peter is, at best, a recalcitrant protégé. He disappointed Ojukwu shortly after enjoying his lavish goodwill. He switched to President Jonathan, convincing us that an Ijaw man is suddenly the descendant of Azikiwe.
Now that Jonathan, his new found mentor, is supposedly frolicking with the much hated “Hausa Party”, very soon Peter’s e-rabbits will christen him “Adamu” just to set the tone for what Peter knows how to do best – disappoint his mentors. Ojukwu was lucky not to feel the treachery first hand. For Jonathan, it would simply be unfortunate.
If this be false, wait and observe if Peter Obi will join President Jonathan in congratulating Mr. Lyon. The PDP may die in the East. Save for the resilience of some local patriots, APGA was almost dying in Peter’s hands. In fact, he had drawn his dagger to stab it but met fierce resistance. What then is there to cherish in an erratic Protégé?
