The Acting MD/CEO of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Prof. Nelson Brambaifa, reached out to people of Niger Delta origin serving various terms at the Port Harcourt prisons in an outreach programme organised in partnership with Bishop Maureen Billion Djanere of the Hope Alive Prison Ministry International, in order to keep the hope of inmates at the prison alive and assure them that though they may be serving various terms at the prison, that it does not mean that life ends with such sentence as after this phase, life continues and what happens after this time is a product of choices made in the prison by each inmate.

The MD /CEO who spoke to the inmates and Prison officials, through the Acting Director of Special Duties, Mr. Patrick Ekadei, delivered various utility products including mattresses, toiletries, beverages, drinks, and food items to the inmates on behalf of the MD/CEO of the NDDC, the team also donated vocational facilities to the prison to build/enhance the vocational abilities of inmates including sewing machines, and other skill related equipments.

Brambaifa in a chat with the inmates advised them to be law abiding while in the correctional facility, tasking them to be productive by helping themselves to build capacity to be able to face the life out there upon regaining freedom. “I must use this medium to tell every Niger Deltan here, that we at the NDDC are committed to the welfare of every Niger Deltan anywhere in the world whether in detention facility or not, and even though the contribution of an individual to the region may be trivial, the bottom line remains that every Niger Deltan is important to me and covered by the Commission’s program under my watch”.

Brambaifa added that under his stewardship, the NDDC would seek to set processes in place to revisit the cases of those with genuine claims of wrongful detention, pledging that the Commission through its various partnership and interventionist platforms would work towards the revisiting of those files to see how, these cases can be resolved, and in the same vein advised the Management of the Port Harcourt prisons to endeavor to put the materials donated to the prison into good use for the best interest of the inmates.

Receiving the donations on behalf of the Prison, the Deputy Comptroller of the Port Harcourt    Maximum Prisons, Mr. Felix Lawrence, who spoke on behalf of the Comptroller of Prisons, Rivers State Command, thanked the MD/CEO and the delegation for putting the programme together, most importantly for not forgetting the inmates to languish. Lawrence stated that this is the first time the NDDC has come out openly in this manner to reach out to the prison and inmates, especially when reports have it that Brambaifa has concluded plans to in like manner reach out to other prisons around the Niger Delta.

Mr. Lawrence also recalled the enormous support and assistance they have been getting from the NDDC, ranging from the donations of a 60KVA generator, several computer sets, water tanks and just like Oliver Twist, he also used the medium to ask for more support in other to make the living condition habitable for all inmates.

Bishop Maureen Billion Djanere on his part said he could not hold back the joy and excitement in his heart but thanked the Acting MD/CEO for being the first Chief Executive of the NDDC to offer this support and assistance to make this outreach to the inmates a reality, hence prayed for God Almighty to crown his effort with abundant Grace and reward.
