As Enugu East Senatorial District yesterday held a so-called unity rally, it was obvious that a number of the members of the opposition, APC, who also hail from that zone stayed away from the rally owing to the fact that the rally had been highjacked by persons, who turned the event into a Peoples Democratic Party rally.

Earlier on, it had been hinted that members of the APC, who were members of the District, were likely to stay away from the rally which was originally proposed to be one of solidarity towards the 2023 Gubernatorial elections.

It has been gathered that aside the Party Chairman, Dr. Ben Nwoye, who attended the event, no notable stakeholder from the APC was seen at the event, which was largely a PDP event, as billboards and other indicators at the event confirmed such, this much led to the APC stalwarts refusal to set foot at the rally grounds.

Big names like Senator Ken Nnamani, one time Senate President and member representing the SouthEast at the Caretaker Committee of the APC, Chief Onyemuche Nnamani, Member representing the SouthEast in the Police Service Commission, Princess Ada Ogbu, Senatorial Candidate in the 2019 elections, Barrister Ifeanyi Nwoga, Gubernatorial aspirant 2019 elections, Hon. Maduka Nelson Arum, House of Reps aspirant 2019 elections and a host of other APC leaders from the Zone.

The fact is that there was a general feeling that no true APC member would attend an obvious PDP event as evidenced by the billboards and attendance of persons at the rally, this did go to show that the rally had been highjacked.

A source, who spoke to us, went on to say that “Even the communique released at the rally passed a vote of confidence on the Governor. How then do we tell our party people to mobilize properly for the forthcoming elections? How then will we approach the people in 2023 to sell our Party’s manifesto and candidate to them had we attended a rally like that? Surprisingly the offensive communique was also signed by the APC State Party Chairman, to the disquiet of a host of party members in the state”.

“Such a stance was one taken on principles and thankfully we know that we have done the right thing” a Chieftain submitted.
