Senator Ekwunife Bags Prestigious Merit Award From Nigerian Medical Association

The Senator representing Anambra Central Senatorial District, Uche Ekwunife PhD, has been honoured with a prestigious merit award by Nigerian Medical Association, Anambra State Branch. The Senator was a recipient of the award in recognition of her contribution to the growth of the association, medical practice and humanity at large.

The 2021 Annual General Meeting/Scientific Conference of the Anambra state branch was a 2-day event with the theme “TISSUES AND ORGAN DONATION” and was held at Senator Uche Ekwunife Event Centre, Awka.

Receiving the award, Ekwunife who was represented by the former Managing Director Anambra State Physical Planning Board, Chief Victor Okpoko, said she was very delighted to be honoured with the award. She commended the medics for their dedication and passion for saving lives, adding that they play a significant role in our lives.

Continuing, the Chairman Senate Committee On Science, Technology and Innovation stressed that the branch houses some of the most talented medical professionals in the country, noting that she will via legislative engagements offer the necessary assistance for the association to achieve its vision and mission statements.

Ekwunife, however assured that the 9th Senate led by the Senate President, Senator Ahmed Lawan, PhD, CON, through robust legislations is committed to good governance and the welfare of the people through apt policies for the general good of the country.

It is pertinent to note that prior to joining politics, Senator Ekwunife who is a stickler for professionalism had a sterling career in the banking industry where she rose from a Branch Manager of Standard Trust Bank to Head of Private Banking Unit of United Bank for Africa (UBA). Her meteoric rise in the banking profession was propelled by the hardwork and dedication she put into her assigned duties which led to her being elected as President, Young Bankers Association in the year 2000. She also earned the prestigious title of Young Banker of the year in 2003.

Ekwunife was elected into the House of Representatives in 2007. As Chairman House Committee On Environment she introduced crucial pieces of legislation that revolutionized the ministry. She also served as Leader, Anambra State Caucus in the House of Representatives between 2011 and 2015.

Due to the exceptional representation Senator Ekwunife provided to her constituents in the House of Representatives, she was elected into the Nigerian Senate in 2015. She was subsequently re-elected to the hallowed chamber in the year 2019 and has continued to blaze the trail in Nigerian politics.
