Umahi Debunks Rumored Rift With Ebonyi Governor

Posted on April 21, 2025
In a bold and public statement, the Minister of Works and former Governor of Ebonyi State, Senator David Nweze Umahi, has dismissed claims alleging a rift between him and the current Governor, Rt. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru. He described the allegations as baseless and the handiwork of political mischief makers seeking to cause unrest for their own selfish gain.
The rumour, which alleged that Governor Nwifuru signed an agreement with the party to serve only a single four-year term, was firmly denied by Sen. Umahi during the flag-off ceremony for the 118.8km Calabar–Ebonyi–Benue–Nasarawa–Abuja Super Highway, held at Amuro Mgbom Primary School in Afikpo Local Government Area.
“There is no such agreement anywhere,” Umahi declared. “I supported Governor Nwifuru’s emergence without placing any conditions. His eight years in office are assured.”
Sen. Umahi, who governed Ebonyi State for eight years, emphasized that he had total control of the political structure during his tenure as Governor and has no intention of interfering with his successor’s leadership.
“Some people think I will return to struggle for power after leaving office,” he said. “But I’m not available for such distractions. The Governor is in full control, and I am proud of his leadership style”.
He praised Governor Nwifuru for his efforts in uniting the state and urged him to ignore critics. Drawing a biblical comparison, “I fought many political battles like David during my time, but Nwifuru is lucky, he is Solomon. Most of those who could have opposed him are now in the APC. He is the luckiest Governor Ebonyi has had.”
Reaffirming his commitment, Sen. Umahi promised continuous support for Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru and the state, stating that the party structure is firmly under the Governor’s leadership.
“For the records, during your Congresses and Convention, I’ll be in Dubai. I won’t be around. So any story about me interfering is pure fiction,” he said.
Senator David Nweze Umahi has continuously proven that he is a man of strong character, unwavering loyalty, and deep integrity. His words and actions continue to reflect his commitment to peace, good governance, and the progress of Ebonyi State.
