In a statement signed by Patrick Oseriemen a.k.a. Sankara, the ACIS Youth/Students Coordinator, the arrested students were identified as Adeyeye Olorunfemi, Tomi Aina, Olufela and Lateef Olawale.

According to Sankara, “the four students were arrested and detained yesterday at the front of the Unilag gate by the Unilag Security Team. They were held throughout the night after being assaulted by the university security guards and afterwards, transferred to the Sabo Police Station, Akoka, Lagos
State.

“Reasons for their detention is not clear, as a minor misdemeanor has been blown out of proportion to trumped up charges of disobedience to lawful order against them!

“We believe their illegal detention is not unconnected to the Alliance of Nigerian Students Against Neo-liberal Attacks (ANSA’s) call for an October 1 Movement for the reinstatement of the 11 students rusticated
at the University of Lagos, 25 students rusticated at the Adekunle Ajasin University, and 2 students rusticated at the Obafemi Awolowo University!”

The statement added: “The ACIS declares its solidarity with the ANSA’s call for the October 1 Million Youths March!

“We believe that peaceful demonstration is a basic human right which no man, government, or University Authority can crush!

“We call on all Nigerians, Youths, Students and Civil Society Organizations to rise up against this draconic action of the Nigerian Police Force!”
