We’re Not Stupid: Don Media Group Slams Critics Over Gov. Otti Media Chat Row

Posted on February 28, 2026

Don Media Group has drawn a line in the sand regarding its editorial freedom, issuing a stinging rebuttal to allegations that its reporters are acting as political mercenaries.

The media conglomerate found itself at the center of a brewing storm following a recent press exchange with Governor Alex Chioma Otti.

Critics had labeled a question asked by Don FM head of news, Chika Nwabueze as a “sponsored attack,” claiming it was designed to undermine the state administration at the behest of political rivals.

In a press release signed by Managing Director, Alozie Uzoukwu, the organization insisted that the “offending” question was nothing more than a journalist doing his job.

”Media chats are platforms for transparency, not endorsement ceremonies,” the statement read. “The question posed was legitimate, professional, and fully consistent with the constitutional responsibility of the media.”

The group took particular aim at attempts to link the reporter’s line of inquiry to the Chairman of Don Media, Mayor Lucky Igbokwe, and the City Boy Movement.

Don Media Group also firmly asserted its editorial independence by clarifying that its reporters operate autonomously from its chairman and any political movements, dismissing “hatchet job” allegations as unfair attempts to suppress independent journalism.

The organization further argued that the public visibility of civic and philanthropic initiatives, such as the City Boy Movement, should not be weaponized to undermine the professional integrity of its newsroom.

Don Media Group argued that if journalists are afraid of “political misinterpretation,” the public’s right to know is the first casualty.

”We will not be deterred in our duty to inform the public truthfully, independently, and without fear or favour,” Uzoukwu concluded, signaling that the organization has no intention of softening its tone in future briefings.
