The 10 years old Western Delta University (WDU), Oghara, is celebrating its first decade this week. It is also holding its combined convocation on Saturday, so it is spreading its welcome mat to all and sundry this week in its permanent site, at Oghara, Ethiope-West Local Government Area, Delta State.

On Sunday, the activities kicked off with a Thanksgiving Service at the Baptist Church, Oghara. Mrs Christine Ibori-Ibie represented the WDU Visitor, Chief James Onanefe Ibori, who had planned to be there but was called upon suddenly to attend to another urgent matter. The Vice-Chancellor of the WDU, Prof (Mrs) Otete Cecilia Okobia led a high class delegation, which included the Registrar, Godwin Ojamaya Egbri, and many other officials of the university to the thanksgiving service.

At exactly 10.45:AM the Pastor of the Baptist Church, Oghara, called on the congregation to pray for WDU saying: “we want to put the Western Delta University in the hands of God. The university is located here (in Oghara).. A Pastor’s child has passed through the university and graduated from it. The meaning should not be lost on you. The meaning is that if the Pastor could financially support his child to successfully go through that university, then anybody here can also do so because that shows clearly that unlike other private universities, the WDU is not costly. So WDU was set up to bring quality education, that is affordable. To your sons and daughters and my sons and daughters; to our children.

“So, I want to thank God for the vision He gave to those who set up the university here in Oghara; so it is your university. So, let the entire church stand up as one and pray for the university. Pray for the V.C, staff and students that the presence of God will always be present in the Western Delta University as it provides quality education at an affordable rate. Please, also pray for the Faculty of Law that is just taking off.”

Every day of this week will be filled with various activities and will climax with the Convocation proper on Saturday.
