Woman Burns Daughter With Hot Iron Over N250, Remanded In Prison

The Magistrates court sitting at Ikeja, Lagos has ordered a 30-year old housewife, Mrs. Ayo Sheriff who used a pressing iron to injure her 16-year old daughter, Aishat over N250 to be remanded in prison custody.

P.M.EXPRESS reports that the court denied Mrs. Sheriff bail after the female investigating police officer informed the Presiding Magistrate, Mrs. O. Sule Amzat that the victim was lying critically ill at the General Hospital.

The Osun-State-born, Mrs. Ayo Sheriff was arrested over the weekend after she used a hot pressing iron to burn the victim. The incident happened at their home in Lagos when her husband was not around.

According to the father of the victim, Mr. Adetokumbo Sheriff, he was still in shock that his wife, Ayo would inflict such injury on their first child over N250.
He told P.M.EXPRESS that he was not around when the incident happened, only saw it on the internet and rushed home to meet his daughter in such sad condition.

He said that when he asked his wife what happened, she told him that she gave the victim N500 to pay her matron.
But the matron later informed her that the victim only gave her N250 and that the mother was still owing N250.
Mr. Sheriff said that when the victim got home, his wife used a hot iron and inflicted injuries on her.

However, the information got to the police, she was arrested and charge to court for the alleged offence.

She pleaded not guilty.

The prosecutor, inspector Benson Emuehi reiterated what the IPO had earlier informed the court and asked the court to use its discretion on her bail.
The court denied Mrs. Ayo Sheriff bail and ordered her to be remanded in prison custody pending when the issue of her bail will be determined.
The matter was adjourned till 23 May, 2018.

P.M.EXPRESS confirmed that Mrs. Sheriff got married to her husband 15 years ago, they had three children and the victim was the eldest. The husband said he could not believe that the wife would do such a thing as she ended up punishing both him and the victim.
He said that since the incident happened, he had spent about N10,000 to buy drugs despite the impression outside that the treatment might be free.
