Anglican Bishop Calls For True Federalism

Posted on February 8, 2017

Bishop in charge of the Calabar Diocese of the Anglican Communion , Right Rev Bishop Tunde Adeleye, has called for true federalism as solution to the country’s problems.

Bishop Adeleye, who was fielding questions from journalists in Calabar Tuesday, said Nigeria won’t get out of the prevailing economic challenges unless power is decentralized from the centre which is too powerful.

According to him, Nigeria is running a unitary government and not a federal government as it is being erroneously portrayed.

Bishop Adeleye said every region should be allowed to exploit its natural resources to ensure equitable distribution of such resources to the people of such zone.

The Bishop said legislative function should be on part time basis to reduce the cost of governance. He also called for young people to be allowed to assume the mantle of leadership while older people should advise and guide the younger ones.

On the state of the nation, he said the suffering in the country has become unbearable to the extent that Nigerians have lost confidence in those in power.

He said the committee set up to reduce prices of commodities is an exercise in futility as it will not achieve anything.

He said the mistake this government made was that they promised the people change which they have been unable to deliver.

He, however, prayed for the quick recovery of President Muhammadu Buhari, saying it is a biblical injunction to pray for people in authority.
