A commercial bus driver and his conductor were reportedly shot and killed by unknown gunmen on Thursday night at Kodesho Street, around the Cash-N-Carry shop in Ikeja, Lagos.

The ugly incident which happened around 10pm caused panic as passersby and shop owners around the scene scampered for safety.

The driver and his conductor were said to be helping to tow another commercial bus along Kodesho Street very close to the Ikeja flyover. An eye witness told P.M.EXPRESS that he was coming from a distance when suddenly he saw a private car block the commercial bus. He said that before the driver and his conductor could come down to ask questions, the man who was sitting by the passenger side of the car came down and shot them at close range.

The sound of the shooting caused panic as passersby and shop owners took to their heels. The unknown gunman jumped back into the waiting car and they sped off. The policemen under the flyover were alerted by the shooting and they tried to give the gunmen a chase.

People around later came out of their hiding and tried to help the driver and his conductor. They were rushed to Lagos State University Teaching University, LASUTH, but they had died by the time they could be attended to.

The eye witness told P.M.EXPRESS that they initially thought the gunmen were FSARS operatives who were after armed robbers but their manner of escape gave the suspicion that they may have been armed robbers who felt the commercial driver was impeding their movement.

The identity of the driver and his conductor could not be established as at the time of filing this report. The police were said to be investigating the incident in order to unravel the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
