CYRIACUS IZUEKWE
At 8:45pm on July 13, 2026, a BRT bus broke down on Third Mainland Bridge. By 9:10pm, four passengers and their valuables were gone. When Police arrived at 11pm, the bus was empty.
That incident captures what many Lagosians now face in 2026.
P.M. EXPRESS spent six months tracking crime and crash data across Lagos. We obtained 2026 records from the Nigeria Police Force Lagos Command, FRSC, LASTMA, LASAMBUS, and conducted 63 interviews with victims and witnesses. Our findings show that five locations account for 41 percent of all reported violent crimes and fatal accidents on Lagos roads this year.
THE 2026 DATA MAP: WHERE THE RISK IS HIGHEST
1. OSHODI UNDER BRIDGE — THE MARKET OF FEAR
*2026 Data: 48 robbery cases, 23 “One Chance” incidents, 9 deaths
*Peak Hours*: 6pm to 11pm
*What We Found*: Although CCTV cameras were installed in 2025, only 3 out of 18 were functioning as of July 2026, according to our checks. Commuters say touts monitor Police movement and alert drivers. Most victims are market women returning from Alaba.
*Victim Account*: “They collect your phone and force you to transfer money before pushing you out of a moving bus,” said Chinedu, 29, who was attacked in June 2026.
2. THIRD MAINLAND BRIDGE — ADEKUNLE TO ADENIJI SECTION*
*2026 Data: 11 fatal crashes, 14 kidnapping and abduction cases, 6 bodies recovered
Peak Hours: 10pm to 3am
What We Found: Data from the FRSC 2026 report shows 68 percent of crashes here involved overspeeding and tyre blowouts. About 2.3km of the bridge remains without streetlights. The Nigeria Police Marine Unit told P.M. EXPRESS the area has also been used to dump victims.
New Trend in 2026: “Fake breakdowns.” Gangs scatter nails on the road, then rob motorists who stop to help.
3. MILE 2 TO BADAGRY EXPRESSWAY*
2026 Data: 5,140 one-way violations recorded by LASTMA in Q1 and Q2, 19 deaths from head-on collisions
Peak Hours: 5am to 9am, 5pm to 9pm
What We Found: Articulated trucks avoid tolls by driving against traffic. LASTMA said it impounded 212 trucks in six months. LASAMBUS records show this 4km stretch recorded the highest number of accident casualties in Lagos in 2026.
4. IYANA IPAJA TO ABULE EGBA AXIS
2026 Data: 56 “One Chance” cases reported to Area P Command, 4 confirmed sexual assaults, ₦12.7 million traced to fraudulent transfers
Peak Hours: 7pm to 12am
What We Found: Our investigation identified a syndicate of bus drivers allegedly working with POS operators. Victims report ATM card cloning inside buses. Women are the main targets. Police confirmed three arrests in May 2026.
5. LEKKI-EPE EXPRESSWAY — ABRAHAM ADESANYA TO AJAH
2026 Data: 31 armed robbery cases, 8 carjackings, insurance claims up 44 percent compared to 2025
Peak Hours: 8pm to 1am
What We Found: Nightly gridlock now averages two hours due to Dangote Refinery trucks. Criminals on motorcycles target 3 to 4 vehicles during each traffic jam. Only one Police patrol van covers the entire 15km stretch at night, according to residents.
WHAT THE 2026 NUMBERS SHOW
1. Time: 73 percent of incidents occur between 6pm and 12am
2. Cause: 52 percent linked to poor lighting, 31 percent to traffic gridlock
3. Reporting Gap: For every one case reported, the NPF estimates four go unreported due to lack of trust
4. Cost: Insurance companies paid ₦2.1 billion in claims from these five spots between January and July 2026
OFFICIAL RESPONSE
The NPF Lagos Commissioner told P.M. EXPRESS: “We have deployed two new Rapid Response Squad vans to Oshodi and Lekki. But we need 400 more personnel.”
The Lagos State Ministry of Works said the solar streetlight project for Third Mainland Bridge and Lekki-Epe Expressway is at 60 percent completion and will be ready in Q4 2026.
The FRSC Sector Commander said: “We will start 24-hour speed cameras on Third Mainland Bridge in August 2026.”
EXPERT VIEW
Dr. Kemi Adebayo, a Road Safety Analyst, said: “Lagos is designing roads for cars, not for safety. Until we provide proper lighting and working cameras, we will continue to count casualties.”
*SURVIVAL GUIDE FOR COMMUTERS IN 2026*
1. Avoid boarding buses at Oshodi and Iyana Ipaja after 7pm
2. Share your live location with family when using Third Mainland Bridge at night
3. Call 112 or 08057000001 for emergencies
4. Do not stop for suspected “fake breakdowns.” Drive to the nearest Police post
THE BOTTOM LINE
In 2026, Lagos is still moving. But in these five locations, every trip after dark comes with risk. Until lighting improves, patrols increase, and accountability is enforced, too many Lagosians will continue to pay the price.
Note: Data compiled from official reports by NPF, FRSC, LASTMA, LASAMBUS, and interviews conducted between January and July 2026. Some names have been withheld for safety reasons. Last updated: August 19, 2026.
3 Ladipo Market Traders Arraigned Over Alleged Theft of N7m Range Rover Catalyst In Lagos
CYRIACUS IZUEKWE
Three traders at Ladipo Market in Ojegunle, Mushin were on Tuesday arraigned before a Lagos Magistrate Court over allegations of conspiracy and theft of a Range Rover catalyst valued at N7 million.
The defendants, Jacob Vitoesi, 23, David Gbadebo Adimula, 25, and Oladimeji Ajibose, 48, were all said to be traders operating within the Ladipo auto parts market.
According to the charge sheet, the incident occurred on July 4, 2026 and July 9, 2026 at 29, Ojekunle Street, Off Isolo Road, Mushin, Lagos in the Lagos Magisterial District.
The Commissioner of Police alleged in Count I that the defendants and others now at large conspired among themselves to commit felony to wit stealing. The offence is contrary to and punishable under Section 411 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2015.
In Count II, the prosecution told the court that the three men stole a Range Rover HSE 2007 Model Catalyst valued at Seven Million Naira Only, N7,000,000.00. The property belongs to one Phillip Adebowale Ogini.
The prosecution said the act contravened Section 280 and is punishable under Section 287 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2015.
In Count III, the Police alleged that Oladimeji Ajibose received the catalyst of Phillip Adebowale Ogini’s vehicle knowing fully that it was stolen. The offence is punishable under Section 328 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015.
When the charges were read to them before Magistrate Miss F.R. Ogunkoyede at Court 218, the defendants entered their plea.
The Prosecuting Officer in the case was listed as ASP Simeon Njue while the Investigating Police Officer is attached to Isolo Police Station.
The court granted them bail in the sum of N2.5 million each with sureties in like sum. The case was adjourned for further hearing.
Members of the Ladipo Market community have expressed concern over the case, saying it could dent the reputation of the market if found to be true. Market leaders have in the past warned traders against involvement in illegal dealings, especially theft of high-value auto parts.
Security experts note that catalytic converters have become prime targets for thieves due to their high resale value. The Police have urged traders and residents to report suspicious activities to authorities instead of taking the law into their own hands.
The defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction.
