The J.P. Clark Center, an unassuming structure with subtle aesthetics dedicated to the preeminent poet, is nestled somewhere between the University of Lagos’ Faculty of Arts and the Law department.

The Center, which is launching a series of activities in promotion of literature and the arts, will begin a quarterly series of book readings and conversations on Thursday, 13 April with one of the most colourful characters from Nigeria’s third generation of writers, Toni Kan, the self-styled ‘Mayor of Lagos,’ as guest.

With B.A and M.A degrees in English Literature, Toni became an editor at 26, gained notoriety with his weekly and somewhat raunchy column in Hints Magazine (almost every home had stacks of Hints once upon a time) and sped through several corporate communications suites with enviable mobility.

He has over six published books to his name, including poetry and short story collections.

The Carnivorous City is Toni Kan’s new novel and there is a sense in which it will define his place in the canon.

Isabella Akinseye will interrogate the writer’s new book, his body of work, his take on the current literary scene, his sex life (maybe not), and everything in between.

The conversation, which will run from 4pm to 7pm, will begin with an open mic session of poetry and prose readings.
