Angry Driver Crushes LASTMA Official On Highway

An angry private driver, Mr. Abuchi Okpara, has been arrested for crushing a Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, official, Mr. Obafemi Ogunmeru, on the highway in Lagos.

P.M.EXPRESS reports that the victim suffered serious injuries on his head and hand, became unconscious and was rushed to a hospital where doctors were battling to save his life.

The incident happened at Igando area along LASU expressway, Lagos.

It was gathered that the victim attempted to perform his lawful duty on the highway when he accosted the driver with a Toyota Sienna with registration number, KIA 633XT, for an undisclosed traffic offence.
However, the driver,  Mr. Okpara, was said to have ignored the directive, increased his speed and hit the victim. The LASTMA official then fell down and became unconscious. He was rushed to the General Hospital where he was said to have been in coma and was being revived with life support machine.

The motive behind the action was not known and left many wondering if Mr. Okpara had any altercation with the LASTMA official before the incident.
He was later arrested, the vehicle was impounded and kept at Igando Police Division as exhibit. He was
charged before the Ejigbo Magistrates court for attempted murder.
He pleaded not guilty.
The prosecutor, Supol Kenneth Asibor, informed the court that the victim was still at the hospital receiving treatment and was unable to come to court.
The Presiding Magistrate, Mr. T.O. Shomade, granted him bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum.  The case was adjourned till 19th September, 2018.
The defendant was remanded in prison custody pending when he will perfect his bail condition.
When P.M.EXPRESS contacted Mr. Okpara, he claimed that it was a case of accident because he had a break failure which caused the accident.
However, police source said that there was no break failure as the vehicle was driven to the station without experiencing such.
