The Lagos State Commissioner of Police ,CP Zubairu Muazu, has come out to ask Lagosians to ignore the many rumours making the rounds on social media platforms about hoodlums fighting the Igbos in Oshodi, Ago Palace Way, Ojota and Lagos Island while promising safe environment for all during and after the Governorship and House of Assembly election coming up on the 9th of March, 2019.

The CP also promised to prosecute one of the miscreants that was injured in the process of disrupting the peaceful election process. He said so while addressing journalists at the POWA Hall on Thursday 28th February, 2019. CP Muazu, who admitted to have resumed office in a crucial moment, said that he has not left any stone untouched in ensuring a peaceful electoral process.

According to him, the entire electoral process was generally peaceful. He said, “I used the word generally, because one cannot rule out one or two instances of incidents in any setting”. The CP cited the Ago Palace Way where some hoodlums invaded some clustered polling units at Ohafia Street, Baba Ewe, Ogunbala Avenue and Canal Avenue where ballot papers and boxes were set ablaze. He said that he personally visited the scenes, addressed the voters and the stakeholders in the community.

The CP also addressed the incident that happened on 27th February, 2019, after the declaration of the Presidential election results by INEC along Akar Road, Okokomaiko, where a group of youths trooped out to celebrate the victory of their party and thereby disrupted traffic along Lagos Badagry Expressway causing a serious breach of public peace on the road users. He said that the Police swung into action, calmed the situation and about thirty-eight suspects were arrested. The hoodlums, who felt that the police have no right to stop them, launched an attack on the police station at Okokomaiko but the Police successfully repelled the attack though the Divisional Police Officer sustained deep injuries during the operation according to the CP and he is responding to treatment.

He further said,”let me reemphasise that Lagos State is peaceful and Lagosians are peace loving people .There is no tribe or community under threat in any part of the State. Our patrol and surveillance have been intensified. We have reviewed and redoubled our strategies to ensure peaceful conduct of Gubernatorial and State House of Assembly elections come 9th of March, 2019”.

The CP is also sounding serious warning to initiators and distributors of fake news. He said, “We will identify you, isolate you and bring you to justice”. In conclusion, the CP said,” remember, together we can continue to make Lagos State safe for all.
