The Senate has adopted the motion for urgent need for the federal ministry of youth and sports to complete and commence activities at the abandoned National Youth Development Facility, Mgbaukwu, Awka North LGA, Anambra state.

The adoption was following the motion of urgent public importance under 41 and 51 of senate standing rules sponsored by Senator Uche Ekwunife. The Federal lawmaker, who has sponsored numerous developmental bills and motions on the floor of the senate, the favourite candidate amongst the constituents is running under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

Delivering the motion, Ekwunife noted with concern that the construction of National Youth Development Centre Mgbaukwu which commenced in 2005 for the benefits of both the host community and the entire people of South East geopolitical zone has been abandoned for the past 11 years. She explained that substantial infrastructure including blocks of buildings were erected and ready for commissioning as far back as March 2011.

Concerned about the deplorable condition of the site, Ekwunife pointed out that the abandoned facility is a well thought out programme of the Federal Government to provide opportunities for training of youths on various skill acquisition programmes. She queried why such a lofty ideal project has not been pursued to its logical conclusion.

“Federal Youth Development Centers Mgbakwu promises to have the capacity to create job opportunities as well as provide other related benefits to the youths and people within its catchment areas, as such, it should be urgently completed and put to use”, the federal lawmaker noted.

Earlier, the senate had before the joint plenary session for the presentation of 2023 National budget by President Muhammadu Buhari mandated the senate committee on Sports and Youth Development to investigate the circumstances leading to the abandonment of the facility and such other facilities abandoned anywhere in the country and report back to the senate within four weeks.
