Homeless Man In Prison For Living Inside Uncompleted Building

A homeless man, Mr. Akeem Azeez has landed in trouble after he moved into uncompleted building and stayed there pending when he will raise money to rent a house in Lagos.

P.M.EXPRESS reports that Azeez was arrested there and charged for burglary and stealing.

The incident happened at an uncompleted building located at Misbau Street in Okerube at Ikotun area of Lagos, where he illegally occupied the house.

The owner of the house, one Mr. Kenneth Obodoroku met Azeez there and informed the police that he had burgled the house and carted away aluminum windows and doors worth N2.5m. The police at Ikotun Division arrested Azeez and asked him to provide the stolen items but he denied that he stole anything there. Azeez was unable to prove how he gained access to the building without the consent of the owner.

He was found culpable and charged before Ejigbo Magistrates court for burglary and stealing.

He pleaded not guilty.

The prosecutor, Supol Kenneth Asibor did not oppose his bail. Thus, the Presiding Magistrate, Mr. T.O.Shomade granted him bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum. He was remanded in prison custody pending when he will perfect his bail condition.
The matter was adjourned till 27 June, 2018.

However, when P.M.EXPRESS contacted Azeez, he insisted that he did not steal anything there and explained he was using the place because he had accommodation problem. He said that he had rented a house before then, when the rent expired, he was unable to renew it and he temporary relocated to the uncompleted building where he slept until he was arrested and charged to court. On how he will perfect his bail and come out of prison, he said that he had no such plans and added that when both the complainant and the court were tired, they will release him because he had no money to perfect his bail.
