How Oju Eko Community Initiative Led World Clean-Up Day Activities In Lagos

The crowd pulling exercise, which focused on markets, motor parks, streets, and waterways, aimed to raise awareness about the urgent need for cleaner environments, healthier lifestyles, and active youth participation in sustainable development.

Convened by Oju Eko Community Empowerment Initiative, under the leadership of its Coordinator, Comrade Haruna Jubril, the advocacy programme brought together Local Government officials, environmental organizations, and youth-led groups. Participants spread across designated clean-up areas, showcasing a collective effort to improve the community.

Participating organizations included Oju Eko Community Empowerment Initiative (Host), Ojodu Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), Ministry of Environment and Water Resources.

Speaking at the event, representatives of Oju Eko Community Empowerment Initiative emphasized that environmental stewardship is a collective responsibility and encouraged residents to adopt regular sanitation habits.

Comrade Haruna Jubril stated, “This clean-up exercise is not just symbolic; it is a call to action for our communities. The cost of neglecting our environment far outweighs the commitment required to keep it clean. Together, we can build a Lagos where our children breathe clean air, drink clean water, and live in cleaner neighbourhoods”.

The initiative applauded the collaboration with local authorities and partner organizations, noting that World Clean-Up Day serves as a global reminder that collective action drives meaningful change. The exercise, which attracted broad participation from youths, traders, community leaders, and civil society groups, reflected a growing culture of civic engagement and environmental responsibility in Lagos.

Oju Eko Community Empowerment Initiative reaffirmed its dedication to driving grassroots-led sustainability programmes that will continue beyond the annual commemoration of World Clean-Up Day, fostering a cleaner, healthier environment for the community.
