How We’ve Prevented Building Collapse In Lagos Schools –LASUBEB Boss

Posted on November 30, 2021

The Executive Chairman, Lagos state Universal Basic Education Board (LASUBEB), Hon. Wahab Alawiye-King, has explained how the agency has prevented collapse of buildings in Lagos schools.

He made this known while fielding questions from journalists after attending the Universal Basic Education School-based Management Committee -School Improvement Programme (SBMC-SIP) implemention in the Southern geo-political zone which took place in Calabar on Monday.

He emphasised that there is no room for compromising standard when building schools.

According to Alawiye-King, “As part of the requirements of UBEC, for you to have access to funding, you must meet some standards. And part of those standards, is to submit first of all, soil test if you are building. If it is a new building you must submit an approved plan.

“Even if it’s rehabilitation, you must submit the integrity test of the building. These are some of the measures we are using in Lagos to ensure that cases of collapsed buildings do not happen in our schools.”

Alawiye-King also said officials also monitor what is happening in the schools, adding, “apart from government agencies, there are non-governmental organisations that equally go to sites and monitor what is going on in our schools while construction is ongoing.”
