The membership drive of the All Progressives Congress, APC, received a big boost in Lagos State following the directives of the President General of the Igbo Speaking Community, Chief Sunday Udeh (Onwa), to Igbo residents in the State to register with the governing party in the State ahead of 2027 election.

P.M.EXPRESS reports that Chief (Dr.)  Udeh made the call after much consultations with the Igbo critical stakeholders and urged Ndigbo in Lagos State and at the Federal level to register with the party for the interest of Ndigbo in general.

Chief Udeh, while making the appeal, emphasised the importance of supporting the governing party in Lagos  State and at the Federal level. He explained that aligning with the party in power will drive progress and ensure the voices of Ndigbo are heard.

“Supporting the ruling party is crucial for the Igbo community’s progress and influence in Lagos, where they have a significant population. And where one lives is where one should maintain and take care of”, implying that Igbos should align themselves with the ruling party, the APC in Lagos State.

He noted that Ndigbo often neglect registration exercises, only to regret it later, and advised community leaders, market associations, and town unions  and other critical stakeholders to mobilise their members to register with the APC.

Chief Udeh stated that having a large population in Lagos, estimated at 10-15 million, means Igbos can significantly impact election outcomes if they support a single party.

He explained that one of the importance of being part of the ruling party is that it enables Igbos to access opportunities and benefits, citing the example of other states where the non-indigenes do not form opposition parties.

He also appealed to the Igbo’s sense of pragmatism, stating that supporting the APC would be beneficial for them and foster good relations with other communities, particularly the Yoruba, who have accommodated Igbos in Lagos.

“Ndigbo should sacrifice a few hours to register with the APC, using their National Identification Number (NIN) and voter’s card, and I am confident that this would lead to a victorious outcome for the party in 2027.”

“A journey of 1,000 miles starts with a step,” emphasising the importance of taking this initial step to register with the APC.”

Chief Dr Sunday Udeh was sworn in as the President General of the Igbo Speaking Community of Lagos State on 24th September 2025. Since then, he has been playing a significant leadership role with a clear vision for unity and progress among the Igbo community in Lagos.

He has continued to  emphasised the importance of the Igbos speaking with one voice, reconciling differences, and fostering togetherness, having faced challenges in the past.

He has restored the dignity of the Igbo Speaking Community, Lagos State and brought indept leadership approach and capacity to build internal cohesion among Igbos in Lagos State.

Chief Udeh has been advocating for unity and peace among Ndigbo and the host community including other ethnic groups and charged Ndigbo to be law-abiding and respectful citizens.

With the recent moves, he has further buttressed the importance of collaboration with the Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, whom he said is supportive of Igbos hence the initiative to urge the Igbos towards achieving a better feat by supporting the ruling party for continuous progress in Lagos State and indeed Nigeria.
