Install Our Cables Now! – Igando Residents Beg Ikeja Electric After Two Months In Darkness

For almost two months now, residents of five streets in Igando community of Lagos state located at Alhaji Ede Bus Stop have been in perpetual darkness as a result of stolen of their cable wire from the transformer in the area under the control of new Igando district under the jurisdiction of Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company IKEDC.

Our correspondent gathered that the PHCN officials came to inspect the transformer recently and urged landlords and residents of the affected streets to provide security gate around the transformer before installing the new cable wire.

According to a resident who refused to mention her name, the affected streets contributed money among themselves to barricade the transformer two weeks ago and up till now, the Igando electric district is yet to install the cable wire which renders the affected streets in perpetual darkness.

“We are in darkness for almost two months now and I think we need to call Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company to look into this matter with urgency because the youths are gradually losing patience for now. Of course, our cable wire was stolen and the officials came here and advised us to barricade the transformer before they will install the new one for us which we have done two weeks ago, but i am surprised that we are still in the darkness for now.

“When the landlords and some tenants went to Igando office to find out what is delaying the installation and what they told them was that they should wait for the cable wire because there are some communities that have similar problem like them, and they are yet to attend to them. If nothing happens this week, the youths in the affected streets may protest and in the course of protest, they may vandalise the electricity company’s property and I want IKEDC to look into this matter because there is tension in the affected areas now, “she said.

Our correspondent who was at the areas could see the bitterness of the residents who complained about the attitude of the Ikeja Electric officials, saying that being in perpetual darkness in last two months is affecting their businesses.

One of them said with the hike of fuel price introduced by the government, if Igando fails to install the cable wire this week, they are ready to protest and they should be ready for the consequences.

“We have done our own part. Enough is Enough. Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company should come to our aid on Monday because we are running out of patience, If there is no light this week, anything can happen,” he said.
