Child trafficking may have taken another dimension in Lagos following the arrest of a 40-year old man, who allegedly stole an 8-month old baby, went to sell the boy to a 50-year old woman but was caught by Police operatives.
P.M.EXPRESS reports that the man, Stanley Maduka, and the woman, Gloria Uma, were arrested for conspiracy and child theft.
The incident happened at about 8pm at Iyana Isashi Bus Stop in Morogbo area of Lagos.
It was gathered that the two suspected had negotiated and agreed to carry out the transaction at the bus stop, where they landed in trouble.
Police source alleged that Maduka brought the baby boy, reasonably suspected to have been stolen, and arranged to sell the boy to Gloria at the bus stop. He brought the baby boy and handed him to Gloria before the Police intercepted and arrested them for questioning.
During interrogation, it was disclosed that the baby was stolen because they could not mention his name or the mother.
They were found culpable by the Police and later charged before the Ogba Magistrates Court for the alleged offence and they pleaded not guilty.
The prosecutor, Supol Benson Emerhi, asked the Court to fix a date for hearing on the matter to enable the Police to prove that he actually committed the offence since he pleaded not guilty.
The Presiding Magistrate, Mrs. O Sule-Amzat, then granted them bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.
They were remanded in prison custody pending when they will perfect their bail conditions. The matter was adjourned till 23rd January, 2020.
