NUJ Partners LASG On Cleaner Lagos Initiative

The Nigeria Union of Journalists, Lagos State Chapter, has been charged to partner with the Lagos State Government in engendering and ensuring the success of the Cleaner Lagos Initiative (CLI) Project designed as the most systematic approach in clearing refuse and keeping Lagos clean.

Speaking during the Union’s visit to the Ministry of Information and Strategy, the Commissioner, Mr. Kehinde Bamigbetan applauded and classified the Union as a progressive entity and urged that it partners with the State Government in addressing refuse management in the State.

The State government will not engage in denial and is committed to solving the waste management problem in the State, he said.

In his words, “We acknowledge the fact that Lagos generates a high volume of waste daily due to its huge population, and we know that every problem is an opportunity to demonstrate a clear vision, clarity of purpose and implement an effective strategy”.

He affirmed that the State Government in the last 72 hours has embarked on the continuous clearing of accumulated refuse across the State.

The Commissioner made a passionate appeal to all Lagos residents stop the indiscriminate dumping of refuse on road medians, saying that they should rather bag the waste properly bagged and leave them in front of their premises as adequate measures are in place to evacuate them.

As part of the measures put in place to ensure that Lagos roads and environment are returned to their prime state, the Commissioner disclosed that the Government has directed that available spaces be provided in all the land filled sites to accommodate more trucks and tippers to discharge refuse and improve the turn-around-time of these vehicles as they discharge refuse at these sites.

“We also appeal to the NUJ to join our cause in mobilising and sensitising our people to be patient and not entertain any fears as the State Government is resolved to ensuring that Lagos State maintains her prime position in the scheme of things”, he said.

Earlier, the State Chairman of the Union, Dr. Quazim Akinreti assured the State government of its readiness, as a progressive body, to project the State Government and its activities, especially as it affects the welfare of all Lagos residents as well as the Nation at large.
