The Ojomu of Ajiran land, HRM Oba Tijani Adetunji Akinloye has applauded the State government’s intensive and seamless crusade on tree planting, urging citizens to cultivate the habit for the sustenance of nature and the well-being of humankind.

Revealing this at a tree planting exercise in commemoration of his 25th Coronation Anniversary held at Ajiran Palace in Eti-Osa, the Royal Majesty admitted that the government through LASPARK has assiduously propagated the relevance of trees to human existence and complementing the drive should be the responsibility of all.

He said the accelerated migration and settlement of local and international investment in the State has made Eti-Osa a prime locality with high infrastructural development and consequently made the region prone to environmental challenges.

According to him, the remarkable population growth in the region has translated to ever-increasing pressure on land for housing and business premises with profound environmental implications of deforestation, wetland reclamation, flooding and other natural challenges.

“Today, we are used to having polished lifestyles which has no benefits to the ecological system, the risks to our health and well-being from removing trees from the environment are far higher’’, he recounted.

He further revealed that apart from its capacity to reduce urban temperatures and the absorption of pollution, trees act as an environmental buffer for the ecosystem as they help improve the extremes of climate and create a surrounding where humans and animals can live comfortably.

Commending the unflinching efforts of the State government towards tree planting in the nooks and crannies of Lagos, the Royal Majesty implored other community leaders to be steadfast in saving the planet and its inhabitants by planting trees.

In her remark, the General Manager of Lagos State Parks and Gardens Agency, Mrs. Bilikiss Adebiyi-Abiola described the tree planting project as a ‘supplication of life’ to the community, extolling the Royal Majesty for being a crusader of such life-saving initiative.

Represented by the Head of Parks and Garden Management in LASPARK, Mrs. Halimat Adeniji at the event, the General Manager used the occasion to remind community leaders and other stakeholders the relevance of collaborating with the government in making the State habitable for all and sundry.

While donating tree samplings to the community, Mrs. Adebiyi-Abiola reiterated the commitment of the State government to support individuals and corporate organisations in the provision of greening ambience, adding that the propensity for tree planting enriches the socio-cultural and economic prosperity of the society.

“Tree planting mitigates the effect of climate change, erosion and other natural disasters, and as such, the government has prohibited the cutting down of trees anywhere in the State without adequate approval from LASPARK’’, she emphasised.
