Sales Woman, 40, Arraigned For Carting Away N.4m Goods From Madam’s Shop

A 40-year old sales woman, Augustina Ekpeyong, has been arrested and charged in Lagos State for allegedly selling her madam’s goods worth over N. 4m and converting it to her own use. 

 

P.M.EXPRESS reports that the incident happened at Adeleye Street, Orile Iganmu, Lagos, where the owner, Mrs. Abigail Iweka Uba, employed her as a sales woman to manage a shop.

 

According to the Police,  the complainant employed her as the sales woman to manage her shop on an agreed amount as salary every month.

However, after she was employed, she allegedly started stealing the items until the complainant discovered that the shop was going down despite the sales they were making daily.

 

The complainant conducted an audit and it was discovered that the items were missing and she was unable to explain what happened.

 

The matter was reported to the Police at Orile Iganmu Division and the suspect was arrested and detained at the station for interrogation over her alleged conduct.

 

After interrogation, the Police found her culpable and consequently charged her before the Ebute Metta Magistrate Court for the alleged offence.

 

 

The charge read:

“That you, Augustina Ekpeyong ‘F’ on the 13th June, 2022 1500hrs at Adeleye Street, Orile Iganmu Lagos, in Lagos State Magisterial District, being employed as a sales woman to manage a provision shop, did steal the sum of Four Hundred And Thirty Two Thousand Naira (N432,000) by selling the goods and converted the proceeds to your own use, property of Abigail Iweka Uba “F” and thereby committed and offence punishable under Section 287 (7) of the criminal law of Lagos State 2015.”

 

However, she pleaded not guilty.

 

The prosecutor, Supol Oladele, then asked the Court to give a date for hearing since he pleaded not guilty to enable the Police to prove that he actually committed the alleged offence.

 

The Presiding Magistrate, Mrs. A.M. Davis, granted her bail with two sureties, who must show evidence of means of livelihood and tax payment while addresses will be verified by the Court.

 

The matter was adjourned for mention while the defendant was remanded in custody at the correctional center pending when she will perfect her bail conditions.
