Rev. Bassey Ayek of the Presbyterian Church, Oko Oba Parish, Lagos may probably have not anticipated what happened on Sunday during the church service after he ordered married female members of his church to hand over all their monies and bank accounts to their husbands.
P.M.EXPRESS gathered that the angry women not only rejected the directives but said it was not their portion and would not do it.
It was learnt that some who could not hold their anger, murmured openly while some reportedly walked away from the church before the Reverend could finished his sermon.
Ayek drew the anger of the women when he said that men are the head of the family and anything any woman has in the marriage belong to the husband.
He said it was clearly written in the Bible and ordained by God that man is the head of the family and women should be under men.
He consequently ordered them to hand over every thing they have in their account to their husbands, an order which have spurned a bitter controversy in the church.
Our correspondent gathered that some of the female members who expressed their rage over the order described it as “chauvinistic and potential act of oppression that could lead to gender violence against women.”
One of the members who craved for anonymity said how can Rev. Ayek gave that kind of preaching in the church, ordering women to give all their money to their husbands.
She said some families are been managed by the wives as most men are out of job and other lazy.
Another woman said the pastor wanted women to part with their money and so the men can then use it to keep or marry another women outside.
When others were asked should the pastor decides to sanction those who may fail to comply with the order, they said they would rather leave the church than to comply.
Efforts by our correspondent to talk to Ayek after the service proved abortive as he was not forthcoming.
