Taekwondo gold medalist, Famous Omorege, says his ambition is to be at the 2020 Olympics.
He told P.M.EXPRESS at the just concluded 3-day 1st Calabar Open Taekwondo Championship that he was excited at the victory and would work hard to make the Nigerian Olympic team in Tokyo 2020.
Omorege said the officiating was excellent, adding that he had won a gold medal in 2014 during a school sports championship and another gold medal at an event in Delta State in 2015.
According to him, “Taekwondo is a good sport that builds not only the body, but also the mind.”
Also speaking, Inspector Anthony Ayogu of Police Departmentof Operations, State Police Command Headquarters, Calabar, said he was disappointed at his performance for winning a bronze medal in the heavyweight category.
“I could have done better if I had trained harder. I hope to do better next time,” he said.
Bishop Usen Umoh, the General Manager of Royal International Farms, one of the sponsors of the championship, said it is going to be an annual event.
“What we are doing is to discover talents. The focus has been too much on football. That is why we decided to support taekwondo. This will benefit the state. Next year’s event will be better,” Umoh said.
Fourteen states and over 100 taekwondoists, both male andfemale, took part in the championship and won medals and cash prizes in various categories.
