Posted on May 27, 2020

Following the celebration of Children’s Day, the National Deputy Chairman (Association of Local Government Vice Chairmen of Nigeria) and Vice Chairman of Ikorodu Local Government, Hon.Princess Folashade Olabanji-Oba, has clamoured for the need for children to be protected against all forms of abuse, violence in the society.

She made this known in a statement made available to P.M.EXPRESS, while urging parents and guardians to ensure that the rights of their children are protected at all cost.

Princess Folashade said that looking at how events have unfolded in the world, one can say lots of children have been victims of several social vices, sexual abuse, domestic violence, to mention a few.

She further explained that some parents too have victimized their children by exposing them to unpleasant things which had put them in danger zone.

She noted that children are leaders of tomorrow, hence, they should be thoroughly trained in the best way that they deserve, given the needed attention, care and should be monitored in all of their actions.

Similarly, she adviced children to be good ambassadors of the country, their homes, in everything they do and that they shouldn’t give in to peer pressure on negativity, no matter how difficult it is.

Full Statement:
May 27, is a significant day in the whole world. I personally feel great witnessing this day, one, as a mother, teacher and nation builder. Also as one who derives pleasure in seeing prospective leaders around.
Interestingly, Nigeria is a blessed nation. Lots of our children are doing excellently well in their various fields. I still believe in the greatness of this great country and the potential to be one if the very best in the world. We just need to work hard at it.
Silence hides violence. Sadly, some of our children have been victims of social vices. Some of them have been exposed to crime, domestic violence, sexual abuse, they have also been victims of human trafficking.
It’s more surprising and disturbing to know that some of these children were exposed to these vices by their parents or relatives. Those that they trust the most.
The rights of children needs to be protected at all cost, it is time for parents to stand up for their children against any form of abuse that may stand in their way.
Most especially, the girl child, she needs to be well equipped, educationally, morally, and in all aspect, just like the  male child will be treated  in order to ensure equality and equity in the society.
Also, children should be aware that in whatever they do, they are representing a nation, they are representing their homes, hence, they should never allow the value that have been impacted into them leave them at anytime.
Although, the pandemic we are currently facing has made children stay in their homes when they are supposed to be in school but education should never stop, children can still learn new things and develop skills beyond the walls of the school.
Furthermore, children are great bunch of talents. Parenting is a serious MINISTRY and should taken as such. I hereby plead with us all parents to help our children discover , develop their talents and purpose driven life.
