In a bid to promote environmental sustainability, Ojodu LCDA, Lagos State, organized the Year 2024 Tree Planting Programme themed “Nurture Our Future“.

The event took place at Ojodu Primary School and saw active participation from various stakeholders, including students, Council Members, Councillors, Traditional and community leaders.

The Executive Chairman of Ojodu LCDA, Hon. Segun Odunmbaku, represented by the Secretary to the Local Government (SLG), Hon. Olaide John Bello, underscored the importance of the initiative. He emphasized that trees play a crucial role in preserving the environment and ensuring the planet’s future.

“By participating in tree planting initiatives, we contribute to the restoration of forests, combat deforestation, and help create a more sustainable future for generations to come,” Hon. Bello stated.

Sanitarian Falana, from the Ojodu LCDA Department of Environment and Sanitation, elaborated on the environmental benefits of tree planting while Supervisor For Environment, Hon Olawale Abdulsalam, highlighted how trees improve air quality, provide habitats for wildlife and enhance the overall ecological balance.

The Community Development Committee (CDC) Chairman, Pastor Segun Fayemi, proposed an innovative approach to sustain the effort.

He suggested allocating trees to individual classrooms and incentivizing students to care for them by offering cash rewards to the most productive class. This initiative aims to foster a sense of responsibility and environmental stewardship among the young students.

The event also featured a call to action by the Oba of Aguda, Kabiyesi Agbaosi, who urged sanitation officials to enforce hygiene practices, especially during the rainy season, to prevent environmental degradation and health hazards.

The tree planting exercise was a collaborative effort with active participation from the Executive Council Members, Management Team, Councillors and the enthusiastic pupils of Ojodu Primary School. This event not only highlighted the importance of environmental conservation but also demonstrated the power of community involvement in nurturing a sustainable future.
