CYRIACUS IZUEKWE

The Police Service Commission, PSC, has approved the promotion of 93 senior Police officers to their next ranks. The announcement was made after the officers completed written examinations and oral interviews.
According to a statement signed on Wednesday by the Commission’s Head of Protocol and Public Affairs, Njoku Kalu, the promotions were among the key decisions taken at the Commission’s Plenary Meeting held in Abuja.
The Commission said the exercise was conducted to meet statutory requirements for promotion in the Nigeria Police Force. Candidates were assessed on performance, competence, and eligibility before the approvals were granted.
Among the officers elevated to the rank of Assistant Inspector General of Police, AIG, were 12 Commissioners of Police. The list includes officers posted to state commands, tactical units, and directorates.
The newly promoted AIGs included the Commissioner of Police in charge of the Counter Terrorism Unit; Commissioners of Police for Plateau, Edo, Bayelsa, Abia, Anambra, Cross River, Jigawa, and Benue States; and senior officers serving at FCID Lagos and FCID AML/CFT.
Other AIG promotions included the Director of the NPF National Cybercrime Centre, NCCC. The Commission said the elevation reflects experience in command, investigations, and specialized policing.
The PSC also promoted 28 Assistant Commissioners of Police to the rank of Deputy Commissioner of Police. The officers serve in departments such as Procurement, Administration, and Criminal Investigation Departments across several states.
Promoted DCPs also include officers from the Police Mobile Force, the Joint Task Force, and zonal commands. The Commission noted that field and administrative experience were considered in the selection.
In addition, 33 Chief Superintendents of Police were promoted to Assistant Commissioner of Police. The Commission said the elevation will strengthen operational and supervisory capacity at the middle management level.
The Commission further confirmed the appointment of 162 Assistant Superintendents of Police II to the substantive rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police I. This, it said, will improve career progression for junior officers.
The Chairman of the Commission, DIG Hashimu Salihu Argungu, congratulated all the promoted officers. He urged them to remain truthful, transparent, and accountable in the discharge of their duties.
The PSC reaffirmed its commitment to a merit-based promotion process that rewards competence and professionalism. It said regular promotions are important for morale, retention, and effective policing nationwide.
